Growing up, the fantasy series I read regularly was L Frank Baum's Oz series. This new version does borrow heavily from the 1939 classic film, but does take elements from the books. It creates the felling of old fashioned adventure film with old fashioned acting and visuals similar to two strip technicolor.
This film is by no means a masterpiece, but it doesn't suffer from the astounding soulessness of other modern fairy tale films.
