Review of Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) by Mloy X — 03 Apr 2014
Oz (James Franco): You can have a nice pile of bananas!
Finley (Zack Braff): Oh, I see, because I'm a monkey I must love bananas!
Oz (James Franco): You don't love bananas?
Finley (Zack Braff): Of course I love bananas, I'm a monkey! Don't be ridiculous!
This was kind of weak, banking heavily on the nostalgia of the original film, it completely failed to capture the magic and the heart of the original. First, with the exception of Rachel Weisz, the "acting" was shallow, the principal cast especially Franco and Kunis pretty much phoned in their performances, Franco especially seem completely out of it. Michelle Williams and Zach Braff gave good performances but there was still something amiss and like I said, the only one who was worth watching in this film was Weisz who gave a wonderfully wicked performance as the conniving Evanora. As much as I like GC, this film was just too heavy handed with it, plus the insane, vomit-inducing color palette just gave me a headache. The story was somewhat interesting but most of the performances was bad that it was distracting and detracted from being completely immersed in the film, thus deterring me from enjoying the experience. This was just a big bowl of okay.
