Review of Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) by Dave J — 05 Nov 2013
It took courage for Disney to re-imagine a beloved classic like The Wizard of Oz. Unfortunately the result is an overdone, Tim Burton-esque film lacking both heart and brains. Seeing the finished product, no one can blame Robert Downey Jr.
for leaving the project. However, the question remains, whose idea was it to replace him with James Franco? The film starts off promising enough (in black and white with a Danny Elfman score), but quickly is drowned in over-the-top colors, infinite CGI effects, headache inducing 3D gimmicks, and a wooden performance by Franco in the titular role.
