Review of Owning Mahowny (2003) by Matt D — 18 Jan 2009
For me, this is Philip Seymour Hoffman's most impressive performance. Maybe not his best, but this role of a compuslive gambler is just such an internal role than a physical exterior one. The eyes, the subtle movements; they all are executed brilliantly by Hoffman.
The story itself is solid, but nothing amazing, and does seem to move a little on the slow side. But the performances by Hoffman, Minnie Driver as his wife, and John Hurt as one of the Alantic City casino owners are what really makes this a surprisingly intrinsic movie experience.
