Review of Owning Mahowny (2003) by Jennifer A — 01 Jul 2005
Being a fan of Philip Seymour Hoffman, I decided to rent Owning Mahowny. It looked promising. A bank employee with a gambling problem. A nice supporting cast that includes Minnie Driver & John Hurt.
Chances are it will at least be watchable, right? Wrong. The biggest problem is that Brian Mahowny may be the dullest main character ever created for film. Hoffman does an okay job playing a dull character, but Mahowny is a yawner.
The second problem? His girlfriend, played by Minnie Driver, is not much better. You wonder what she ever saw in this guy. The third problem is a very thin script. Very much Made-For-TV fare, and bad Made-For-TV fare at that.
No wonder nobody watched this film. It's a yawner to avoid at all costs.
