Review of Overnight (2003) by Kevin M — 01 Nov 2007
A very fine documentary made by two friends of Troy Duffy, epic asshole and director of "Boondock Saints". After securing a record deal and a "spoken contract" with Miramax within a month of each other, Duffy's star rises immediately. At first he uses the documentary as yet another way to fuel his awesome, overinflated ego. Witness Duffy on the phone with his agents at Phillip Morris, throwing hissy fits and rejecting most of the actors interested in his terrible script. In a trail of angry, rambling voice messages and hundreds of cigarette butts, he alienates not only his few contacts in Hollywood, but most of his personal friends. His lame jam band, "The Brood", breaks down before your very eyes after their record sells less than 700 copies. Watch Duffy become more "philosophical" as his "career" spirals to earth like a downed B-52.
Somehow "Saints" became a hit although it is a terrible film, like a lame Guy Ritchie knockoff with none of Ritchie's verve or wit. In a fantastic twist, his agency negotiates a contract excluding him from all home video revenue. The final shot is a subtle but hilarious visual joke that sums up this man(iac)'s personality to a T.
