Review of Overboard (2018) by Hector V — 22 Aug 2018
A remake of the 1987 Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell film, Overboard shines when it leans into its uniqueness from the original. After falling off his yacht and losing his memory, Leonardo Montenegro (Eugenio Derbez) is adopted by Kate Sullivan (Anna Faris) as the new father/laborer of her poor family out of retribution for causing her to lose her job.
The role reversal from the original and the new bilingual elements spice up the otherwise routine storytelling, which does have its moments thanks to Derbez's chemistry with his onscreen families, scam and all. The mostly Mexican cast is great, though there's some noticeable overacting by Faris at times. Overall, the movie is a good watch, if a little forgettable.
