Review of Overboard (2018) by Robert E — 31 Jul 2018

Okay I'm going to be honest, you will probably only LOVE this movie if you're Hispanic and at best enjoy it otherwise. I mean, it really really helps to be Hispanic to LOVE this movie as much as I did so sorry, sue me for loving a movie that has so much Latin flare in it! It's unfortunate though for our non Spanish speaking brothers and sisters that the subtitles were at times very different from what was being said in Spanish, so the jokes were most of the time different and not as funny in English.

I'll admit that I haven't seen the original, but I scratch my head when critics here say that this remake didn't bring anything new to the table, as if they are the ones who dictate the purpose of films.

As a serious artist myself, I agree there's some objectivity to what makes something good, but even then I'd disagree that there was nothing new brought to the table, as if the Latin influence wasn't in front of their faces.

So since this plot was pretty new to me, I cringed thinking about how this ridiculous plot (which again it's a comedy so that's totally fine and a good thing in my opinion) would eventually climax, but I was relieved and well pleased to see it played out rather well for a comedy.

Remember that a lot of comedies don't do this well and even then we have to think that it's okay for those movies because it's a comedy! But this movie played everything out exceptionally and had me crying a lot when we see the main character conflicted by everything.

It was refreshing to see this ridiculous plot played out today for newer audiences and especially for me being Mexican, to see the Hispanic inlufence and flare. I think it's great that we have movies that bring out other cultures this way, especially because I know Mexicans aren't the only ones who love and appreciate the Latin culture and will enjoy this movie a lot.

Plus black people have Tyler Perry movies and we see how many different cultures love them because of how much American pop culture has been influenced by African American culture. I don't know if people can reply to this but I expect to be called a racist for saying "black people" so unfortunately those people will continue to live in their ignorance and give this movie a poor rating.
