Review of Over the Top (1987) by Phillip S — 27 Jan 2008
Stallone. An arm-wrestling truck driver or some crap who has a son in military school and goes and gets him out or some foolishness, and then competes in a battle royale in Vegas "for the house." He goes "over the top," if you will. He risks it all and gains everything. [spoiler coming] Stallone's character WINS at the end! And his son respects him even though he's a truck driving arm wrestler.
I'm posting this note to encourage you to rent the film or purchase a copy (preferably in "Beta" or Laserdisc format) so that you can witness the excitement for yourself. I remember sitting through this entire movie once because I was so dumbfounded by its brash stupidity and arrogant attention to...umm...going over the top, I guess.
And then there's this awful song. "Meet Me Halfway." By Kenny Loggins.
Words can't even describe how much I dislike this song. I haven't really liked anything Kenny Loggins has done ever, except for "I'm Alright" from Caddyshack and that was 1980...what have you done for me lately, Kenny Loggins? That's right, dude...nothing. And don't tell me about Top Gun...I hated that, too.
