Review of Over the Top (1987) by D R — 22 Mar 2009
Over the Top is an entertaining 80's family/drama about a father/arm wrestler named Loggin Hawk (Sylvester Stallone) who goes over the edge by facing two of the biggest challenges of his life. One, Hawk must show how good a father he can be for his son Michael.
Two Hawk must go against the best arm wrestlers in the world so he can get back on his feet with things. Along the way, Hawk has a big problem that interferes with him & his son & that is Michael's grandfather (Robert Loggia).
The grandfather doesn't want Hawk to be apart of Michael's life because of the way Hawk wasn't there for him in the past. Now Hawk must prove to Michaels grandfather that he will be there for his son whenever he needs him & show everyone that he's a champion in arm wrestling.
Over the Top is a film that the whole family will enjoy. It has a good plot, good action & emotional moments. Sylvester Stallone was good in this one. Its probably one of his best films to date. Sly shows exactly how a father should be to a son.
He kicks butt like he always does by doing everything it takes to getting his way. When the arm wrestlling matches come, its so very entertaining as you sit there & watch Sly beat everyone of his opponents.
Robert Loggia did good with his role as the furious grandfather trying to take everything away from Sly. Oh & this films soundtrack rocks with 80's rock'nroll which we don't hear much anymore.
Over the Top is a satisfying drama filled with heart felt emotion & acting. 3 stars.
