Review of Over the Top (1987) by Patrick M — 26 Nov 2009
Indifference of many peoples ratings of this movie, I absolutely love it. Yes you could call it a drama, with some action scenes including the arm-wrestling. But that isn't what does it for me. Since I've never really spent much time in my life with my father this movie always seemed to fill a void of something of which I wish my father would have been like. Not meaning an arm-wrestler or anything, but more so the case that he loved his son, didn't want to give him away, but never got a fair deal from the grandfather and therefore was pretty much screwed over. I look at it like a feel good movie mixed in with "over-coming the odds".
Bull Hurley creates this perfect villain role in the movie and the script I think is fantastic. The best scene aside from the end is where Hawk is in jail and his son is doubting what life would be like with him, where would they go, what would they do? One of the best lines in a movie, "the World meets nobody half way, if you want it, you gotta take it.".
It's a great movie, give it a chance.
