Review of Over the Top (1987) by Steve B — 24 Oct 2010
Sylvester Stallone stars as the awesomely named Lincoln Hawk - a trucker trying to make amends with his estranged son after a 10 year absence, a task not made easy by Robert Loggia's villainous father-in-law who considers the boy his own.
At the same time Hawk has to prepare for a Las Vegas arm wrestling tournament, which he hopes to win and start his own trucking business with the prize money. The father-son relationship is actually handled surprisingly well considering this is a Cannon movie (the guys who made American Ninja, Invasion USA, Cobra and countless other brainless action cheesefests).
The relationship develops believably and is helped by decent acting from the kid (David Mendenhall). Cannon fans, don't despair though because you'll certainly get your fix of daft nonsense from the arm wrestling scenes with ever more ridiculous characters showing up to shout random threats, bare their 'roided up biceps and drink motor oil (!).
A fun, feelgood movie with a lot of heart.
