The gore was a bit overdone (splashing/spraying blood with every sword swing almost like a Kill Bill movie), but the attention to historical detail and gritty feel give this movie a darker, more-serious tone.
Robert's love story was done rather poorly thoguh... very typical in approach. They just had to get that sex scene in there, I guess.
