Review of Outland (1981) by Tino R — 29 Nov 2010
An old fashioned Western in space, hardly original, but Hyams keeps the action and suspense ticking over creating a decent genre film. Connery does bring some gravitas as the Marshal on a distant mining colony whose boss is deep in illegal drug dealing and doesn't expect any fuss.
Parallels with High Noon are simplistic, but it does have that old western lone Marshall feel and the environment is suitably grimy and very unglamorous. Special effects are hit and miss even for the time, the finale an anticlimax but the positive ending is quite welcome compared to many bleak scifi offerings.
