Review of Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism (2004) by Chris G — 12 Jul 2010
A flashy but flawed piece of agit-prop on a news channel which some people say actually leaves its viewers less informed...
Burgeoning documentarian Robert Greenwald (â??Uncovered: The Whole Truth about the Iraq Warâ??) follows his debut move into progressive documentary by using Murdoch's own playbook against him in this muck-racking attack which proved popular enough for a post-DVD theatrical release and featured in â??Doonesburyâ?? strips by Garry Trudeau.
The movie kicks off with a blink and youâ??ll miss it profile of Rupert Murdoch and his media empire before moving onto the meat of the matter with a look at editorial interference, the blurring of news and commentary, the intimidation of guests, the generation of fear and the political bias of this fair and balanced news network.
Professor Bob McChesney head up the corp. of media analyst and disgruntled former employees including Jeff Cohen, David Brock and comedian turned US senator Al Franken who pour scorn on the network but it is the heroic Jeremy Glick and veteran news anchor Walter Cronkite who really shine through.
The recently reinvented television director once again relies on his impressive assemblage of experts to expose the disturbing practises of the so-called news organisation, but with amusing copyright infringing clips from Fox itself to underline every point and enliven the otherwise somewhat staid talking-head format.
â??You cannot out-Fox Fox.â??
