Review of Outbreak (1995) by Michael S — 17 Feb 2011
The thing about disaster movies is that they always have a ton of actors and a 'what if' scare, but they filled to the brim with unbelievable moments and over acting across the board. Outbreak plays these rules perfectly.
The name says it all, there is an outbreak of a horrible disease. It makes it to the US, and, due to a predictable series of events, begins to spread. It is contained in one town and they are forced to deal with the mutation of the strand, getting the cure, staying alive, and fighting off the military that is trying to wipe them out. So now, it's up to Dustin Hoffman to save the day.
The movie is way too over the top. It spends to much time making sure we all understand just how horrible this thing is. People are coughing in movie theaters, in planes, in restaurants. It's like The Stand, but it isn't as dark, and it is almost comical.
This is an interesting entry in the disaster movie genre. All the modern technology of 1995, and yet all the sensibility of the 70's. Unfortunately, this movie is too long to be a good 'watch it drunk' movie. So, it's really best to just pass it up.
