Which is more loathsome, the critic or the academic? Neither has any first-hand experience with the creative process or knows enough to ask the right questions, namely "what effect did it have and what did the artist do to create that effect?" If you aren't interested in those questions, this film will probably seem formulaic, as it did for most critics.

If, on the other hand, you have any love for how a camera can communicate thoughts and feelings wordlessly, then you may find yourself watching this several times to understand how it works. Carl Franklin is a massively under-appreciated director who has obviously studied his Hitchcock.

Denzel is amazing as always, but even Eva Mendes manages to give a great performance under Franklin's direction. The marital redemption subplot is touching and not forced, as these things tend to be.
