Review of Out of the Past (1947) by Diane W — 06 Nov 2007
Along with Double Indemnity, Out of the Past is quite possibly the most perfect example of Film Noir. Robert Mitchum is the very essence of the noir anti-hero; playing his character with jaded, sleepy-eyed perfection, and the rest of the principal cast are uniformally excellent.
With lines like 'build my gallows high, baby', this is a cynical portrayal of how the past always catches up, no matter how far you run. A masterpiece.
