Almost certainly the greatest of the noirs, bleak, fatalistic and possessed of a sad poetry. The dialogue is especially noteworthy; characters fence wittily and playfully with each other, brutality and menace submerged just below the waterline.
Kirk Douglas is surprisingly scary as the gangster.
