Review of Out of the Past (1947) by Petri R — 07 Apr 2008
A well made film noir and my introduction to robert mitchum. the film is shot very well, and the acting is what is to expected, old school hollywood, just like I like'em. the film was made by jacques tourneur who also made the great 'cat people' film and he definitely has an eye for cinematography and how to use shadows to great effect.
kirk douglas shows up as witt sterling and is electrifying. the story is a little difficult to follow with so many double crosses, but I doubt that has anything to do with the film's lack of coherency then with the fact I might have been losing focus during the middle of the film.
still, this is a very solid film noir.
