Review of Out of the Past (1947) by Alexandre R — 27 Feb 2009
The finest film noir I know of, atypical in style yet suited in the proper fashion. The script is meaty with superb dialogue, and bookended with a sparse and fascinating character. The plot is strikingly similar to Cronenburg's A History of Violence, although Out of the Past spends half its time in flashback.
The performances are more realistic than other genre numbers from the day. Mitchum lugs the weight of the leading man from San Francisco to Acapulco, and Kirk Douglas does a stellar job as a dastardly weasel.
Out of the Past is the peak of American entertainment before Hollywood blacklisting picked up speed. Highly recommended.
