Review of Out of the Past (1947) by Kenny K — 16 Oct 2010
This excellent example of film noir was the inspiration for its remake as "Against All Odds," which I liked (mostly) for the luminous Rachel Ward. But this movie, with its much more complex plot and the stunning Jane Greer (wow!) served primarily to put Robert Mitchum on the map. Great fun, plus everybody has always got cigarette in their mouth.
Like Penn Gillette says, as he lights up a cigarette at the end of his act, "Hey, kids, don't smoke . . . unless you want to look REALLY cool!".
Mitchum is the coolest. And Kirk Douglas, as the slimy crime boss, ain't bad either.
