This is Noir at its best. Robert Mitchum was the true king of Film Noir (Bogie, although the greatest, could never have been as convincingly dark as Mitchum). this film has it all: gangsters, flashbacks, devious women, backstabbing men, and a not-so-happy ending.
Classic.
