Review of Out of the Furnace (2013) by Jason K — 27 Dec 2013
A very intense, well acted film. casey affleck was extraorinary once again showing how much better of an actor he is than his brother. woody harrelson's best performane since natural born killers. zoe saldana adds some eye candy with some quality acting mixed in. a quite but effective role for sam shepard.
I am not a fan of christian bale but many will like him and he was sympathetic and complex.
The movie as a whole is gripping and violent. heartwarming and brutal. sexy and extremely ugly. most of all, the movie is real. the scene in the jail when the father dies could bring you to tears. while the final fight scene will make you turn your head.
There is kind of a message but it is more a story of bale's pathetic and difficult life despite his efforts to be good. they showed him many times cleaning the dishes and fixing up the house. he is affleck's father more than his brother. affleck just kills it as rodney. his sweetness and anger, kindness and brutality was hard to pull off.
I highly suggest you see this movie but know that you will cringe and cry and shake your head.
4/5 stars. almost a must see.
