Review of Out of the Furnace (2013) by Ayman A — 30 Jan 2014
A film about two brothers facing difficulties, separations and a redneck kingpin. When the police fails to track down the younger brother's disappearance (Casey Affleck), older brother Christian Bale takes the law into his own hands.
Characters weren't fully explored, especially Woody Harrelson's who was the most interesting out of all of them. Why? He brings that good old-fashioned thug back on the big screen - a brute, a monster, a psychopath. The sort of guy you don't want to hold back if he was in a fight.
The script could have been executed better but since this was the director's second film of his career, I guess he turned it into one of those style over substance type of movies. Slightly longer of a movie than it should be too.
Having said all that, the three lead actors gave an undeniably outstanding Oscar worthy, authentic, white-knuckle performance with some unpredictable, incredibly tense scenes. I quite enjoyed that.
