Review of Out of the Furnace (2013) by Roxanne R — 01 Jun 2014
Most definitely a gritty and depressing film showing how the working poor copes with life. OMG, I thank my lucky stars that I am not in their shoes and this confirms what I have said about the hillbillies that live in those mountains- dangerous people that are fearless.
What is this film about? We have Russell Blaze (C. Bale) working a dead end job at the mill, caring for his terminally ill father at night. His brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) returns home from serving a tour in Iraq, and desperate for money so he gets lured into a bare knuckles illegal fight group.
The film continues from there but suffice it to say this is more a manly film because from a woman's point of view, I would have done things differently than Russell Blaze. The scariest role on this film goes to Woody Harrelson (Harlan DeGroat)- a sociopathic drug dealer from New Jersey that organizes illegal bare fist fight events.
During the first 10 minutes of this motion picture you will see how crazy Harlan DeGroat is! After watching that film I was thanking God for not having the life those men had, how awful. I recommend this one more to my male friends than women friends.
Although the ending was somewhat satisfying, it is not how I would have ended it.
