Review of Out of the Furnace (2013) by Judge L — 21 Jul 2014
"Dark blue collar dramatic thriller" can sum this one up in 5 words, but it doesn't do it any justice. An ensemble of Hollywood's elite sets the stage for one hell of a thrill ride. In the same sort of vein as Winter's Bone, this film takes us through the bowels of meth addiction, underground fighting and true grit American scum.
Through all of that, there is still drama that could make the Pope weep. Which gives the movie such an edge on other films of 2013. This movie isn't for everybody, it has some extremely graphic scenes and swearing like pirates, but therein lies the grittiness.
I'm not giving any plot away for this film, if you haven't seen it yet, you have to, and it was recently added on Netflix, so set aside 2 hours in the near future to have your mind blown. There are some scenes in this movie that will have you on the verge of a panic attack.
Unfortunately the Academy didn't respect this film the way that they should have, probably for the graphic nature. They preferred Sandra Bullock floating around space, I would prefer that too if it was in real life.
This film not only gets 5 out of 5 stars from me, it receives my nod for the best film of 2013.
