Review of Out of the Furnace (2013) by Nick A — 05 Sep 2014
Beyond its mere mimicry of Oscar-baiting genre topics, Out of the Furnace has the embarrassing distinction of also wasting its own Oscar-baiting cast, which provides equal deftness to the material as the film provides pathetic and futile self-whoring.
The culprit is writer-director Scott Cooper, and to paraphrase Wesley Morris, Cooper conducts his cinema as though he has something of value or uniqueness to share, but he doesn't. Cooper is just a taker of pretty images -- a fool who's never known the responsibility of a visionary, for he has no apparent creative vision.
