Review of Out of the Furnace (2013) by Tony P — 28 Dec 2014
A gritty drama about a family. Russell Baze (Christian Bale) works at a Steel Mill and takes care of his ill father. He tries to keep his brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) out of trouble, but after a few tours in Iraq his brothers begins fighting in crime rings with John Petty (Willem Dafoe) a local loan shark representing him.
He soon gets in over his head and journeys deep into the Northeast to fight. The ring is run by a ruthless thug named Harlan DeGroat (Woody Harrelson, who does a fantastic job being crazy). When Rodney goes missing, Russell takes it upon himself to find his brother and find out what has been going on.
A very powerful movie. Lots of great scenes of the ghost towns that a lot of the east coast has forgotten about. Bale does fantastic. Especially in a scene where he talks to his ex-girlfriend Lena (Zoe Saldana).
They talk on a bridge where he discovers she's pregnant. It's so heartbreaking and so real that I really caught on from there and had to finish the story. Overall, this was a super overlooked movie from last year that I recommend giving a look!
