Review of Out of the Furnace (2013) by Alex R — 03 Jan 2014
Out of the Furnace is a stunning revenge picture with a phenomenal cast. I went into this not knowing anything about it, and I was surprised. The film has raw, gritty moments that make for a standout picture.
With a well crafted story, and smartly written script, Out of the Furnace is a gripping picture that will suck you into its plot from start to finish. There are several great performances here, including that of Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe and Woody Harrelson.
The film was directed by Scott Cooper, who previously helmed Crazy Heart, and he crafts yet again another solid picture, one that elevates the bar in the genre. I really loved the film, and this is among my favorites of the year.
Out of the Furnace has received some flack, but it doesn't deserve it as it is a brilliantly acted and directed picture that ranks among the years finest. I felt that it echoed the Coen Brothers in the way it relied on atmosphere and method to tell its story.
Every actor delivers memorable performances, and adds to the powerful story. If you love the genre, don't pass this one up, this is a truly engaging picture from start to finish. If you've enjoyed Scott Cooper previous films, then definitely give this one a shot.
This film was a pleasant surprise, one that exceeded my expectations. Out of the Furnace is a riveting drama that manages to be thrilling, dramatic and memorable. The film has a dark, brooding atmosphere which makes this a stunning cinematic experience, and one that delivers on all fronts.
Expect some top notch performance out of this film, and great storytelling.
