Review of Out of Sight (1998) by Paul W — 17 Dec 2007
Is this your first time being robbed?
Entertaining from start to finish.
The Story: A U.S Marshall falls for a charming bank robber and finding it difficult to arrest him. It's more or less a stylish game of cat and mouse here, and as such, it's a little on the repetitive side. It's not necessarily a bad repetition, but it's not necessarily the best either. Bank robber runs, Marshall chases, bank robber runs, Marshall chases... Rinse and repeat. It's all the stuff that happens as he runs, and as she chases that makes it entertaining. The cinematography is great, and the sense of style is just as good. It's easy to see why this one was nominated for best film editing in the 1999 Oscars.
The Cast: George Clooney, Ving Rhames, Jennifer Lopez... George Clooney is Jack Foley, the smooth talking bank robber. He gives a great performance here, and you'll really want to see him get what he deserves (whatever you think that might be). Ving Rhames is Buddy Bragg, he's Jacks partner in crime. He gives a strong performance but you won't feel the same connection with him that you will with Clooney. Jennifer Lopez is Karen Sisco, the sexy U.S Marshall hot on the trail of the charming Jack Foley. I'm not a big fan of Lopez, actually her involvement with the film was almost a deal breaker in the decision to watch it. But rest assured, even if you don't like her in anything else, your feelings will change for this film. Maybe it's because it's not some cheesy romantic comedy, or maybe it's because her usual mediocre acting is absent and in it's place is a great performance.
One to Five Scale: 4.
It falls prey to the same faults as every other cat and mouse scenario, the cycle of repetition ultimately making for a sometimes predictable story. But repetition or not, this one is worthy of your attention.
Tyler.
