Review of Out of Sight (1998) by Camilla S — 08 Jun 2008
I am an extremely vocal Steven Soderbergh disser; I hated Traffic, Solaris and Ocean's Twelve. Even though Ocean's Eleven and Thirteen were excellent, I'm wary of choosing Soderbergh 'experiences.
' I absolutely loved 'Out of Sight.' I played like a prequel to Ocean's Eleven (both starred Clooney and Cheadle) because of it's similar themes and cinematography. Interestingly, 'Sight' ends with Clooney's character going to prison and 'Eleven' begins with his character getting out of prison.
I'm beginning to like Lopez as an actress, between this and 'The Cell.' Besides these, she usually sticks to rom coms, so it's disappointing to see she doesn't stick to thrillers. 1998 was around when Clooney exited 'ER' and began his film career hardcore, and 'Sight' sees him evolve into a maliable leading man, sticking with Soderbergh with the Ocean's and Solaris.
The story, adapted by Scott Frank ('The Lookout' is a HUGE favorite of mine) is superb and the visual feel of the movie is dark yet comedically fluffy, something that's not easy to pull off.
It's also interesting to point out the Lopez's character Karen Sisco went on to star in a TV series of the same name on ABC in 2003. It lasted for 7 episodes and starred Carla Gugino as Siso. Anyway, loved the hell out of this film.
