Review of Out of Sight (1998) by ! G-Man ! — 13 Sep 2009
Saw this again recently on cable. This is easily one of the best films of the last 20 years, and to date the only truly great film Jennifer Lopez has appeared in. Soderbergh elevates Elmore Leonard's whip-smart novel (about a federal marshal who falls for the escaped con she's chasing) into something near-sublime, at least within the crime genre.
A high point for everyone involved, from Clooney and Lopez's performances (and believable chemistry) to the impeccable editing, music, sound design... you name it, 'Out of Sight' excels. It also boasts one of the best love scenes ever (a homage to Nicholas Roeg's 'Don't Look Now').
The year it was released, it even topped the NY critic's lists of film of the year, surpassing 'Saving Private Ryan'. (Fun fact: Michael Keaton reprises his role from 'Jackie Brown' in a cameo appearance.
) If you haven't seen this film already, what the hell is wrong with you?
