Review of Out of Sight (1998) by Davey M — 05 Nov 2009
Very entertaining thriller-romance-comedy from Steven Soderbergh, who finds a wonderful balance between grand, old-fashioned entertainment and something a little more quiet and personal (the freeze frames and the music are Soderbergh doing Cool as only he can do Cool, but they are also surprisingly poignant at times).
Clooney is great, as is the supporting cast--Steve Zahn, Don Cheadle, Albert Brooks, Catherine Keener, and an odd ending with Samuel L. Jackson. Even Jennifer Lopez isn't bad. It's fun, funny, exciting, sad, suspenseful, sexy, and stylish.
It's a little uneven at times, occasionally a little bit too focused on entertainment at the expense of anything substantial, but it's great fun, and there's a lot of really lovely personality to it.
Not perfect, but terrific stuff.
