Review of Out of Africa (1985) by Emilia P — 20 Jan 2009
Isn't Meryl Streep just wonderful? Yes, but the movie wasn't. It was too long and the story was sad. There were too many dispensable scenes; only music and African landscape. If I wan't to see African landscape, I'll see a documentary... This movie teaches not to go to Africa;.
Karen moves to Africa with her new husband, they start a coffee plantation, later on an inferno destroys all the hard work they've done. She gets sick and there's a 50/50 chance that she may not make it. She survives but she won't be able to have kids. Her husband wants a divorce, that's fine with her because she's in love with someone else, Denys. When Karen and Denys finally decide to be together, he dies in a plane crash. And then she moves back to Denmark (?) and never returns to Africa. Too much drama for my taste. The ending ruined everything. They should've lived happily ever after.
