Review of Out of Africa (1985) by Patrick B — 14 Mar 2010
This is yet another film that tries to hide behind beautiful cinematography and a brilliant score. Yeah, Meryl Streep nails her accent, and Redford tries to make his character interesting, but neither one of them can sustain the film for 161 minutes.
Their romance is sappy and contrived, and towards the end I wanted to punch the screen because I was so sick of Meryl Streep's cheesy poetic voiceovers. "Out of Africa" is pure Oscar bait, and the Academy ate it up by giving the film 7 Academy Awards.
