Review of Out of Africa (1985) by Min K — 21 Feb 2011
Beautiful film about an intriguing, strong-willed baroness - a perfect role for Streep who gives the character such reality and depth. This is one of those films that tells its story not through overt exposition or plot points, but through moods, snippets of scenes and terse but effective dialogue.
Filled with breathtaking and moving imagery from Africa and a very aptly composed score, this film is a perfect mixture of larger-than-life spectacle and humble biopic. The acting is well-done and the directing/cinematography/editing are executed quite well.
I do find it odd that synopses for this film tout it as a romance (though the relationship between Redford and Streep is quite compellingly realistic), when in fact, it is truly about a woman's struggle to find and assert herself.
Length might be a downside to modern viewers, but the film remains engaging throughout with Streep's performance and the fantastic shots.
