Review of Out of Africa (1985) by Raja N — 31 Oct 2011
Superb romantic drama based on the life of Karen Blixen, who married for convenience and became Baroness Blixen. It focused on the time she stayed in Kenya to run a coffee plantation, and eventually got away from her husband to fall to british adventurer and idealist played by Robert Redford, whom I think was slightly miscast for a british anyway, but that's not what we're gonna focus on right now.
The film is not lead by the performances, despite having Merryl Streep, Robert Redford, and Klaus Maria Brandauer, who all gave away good performances. The success was first of all due to Sydney Pollack's directorial work, aside from the superb photography and cinematography, and most importantly the brilliant charismatic score by John Barry. It's no wonder that Out of Africa was the best movie of 1985, and it wasn't overrated by any means.
