Review of Our Kind of Traitor (2016) by Terese O — 12 Jul 2016
I thoroughly enjoyed this! I'm surprised it isn't getting higher marks here. Granted, I find many blockbusters boring: big, flashy, and dull -- so what do I know? This was the opposite -- a fast-moving, tense, smart and stylish thriller.
It positions a nice young married couple in a vise formed by the Russian mafia on one side and international finance on the other. The acting is expert, the international settings breathtaking, from Marrakech to the Swiss Alps.
Fine camera work and a score that does its job masterfully, intensifying the pervasive sense of intrigue and raising the emotional stakes. During the first part of the film, I hadn't expected there would ever BE any emotional stakes -- I thought we were in for an old-school Bond caper without Bond-- but there certainly are.
The ending is bittersweet but satisfying. I'd see this again, and I don't say that about many movies.
