Review of Our Kind of Traitor (2016) by Re M — 06 Mar 2017
For me, movies based upon John Le Carre novels can be very hit and miss, they either keep you on the edge of your seat throughout or looking at the time, wondering if it will ever end. This one was definitely in the former category and quite possibly the best adaptation of one of Le Carre's novels I have ever seen.
Unlike many of his other spy-based stories, this one focuses on an ordinary couple who while on holiday are befriended by a Russian offering information to the British Secret Service in exchange for asylum for himself and his family.
From here develops a tale of Russian gangsters, espionage and dirty politics as Ewan McGregor's character fights to keep his new friend alive. I found the film incredibly tense as a family are hunted down on their way to seek help from a government who are sitting on the fence for the majority of the movie.
Well worth seeing if you're looking to lose some length from your fingernails.
