Review of Our Hospitality (1923) by Curtis M — 07 May 2009
Buster Keaton struck gold with â??Our Hospitality.â?? From beginning to end, the film is a comedic thrill ride filled to the brim with classic Keaton moments. The journey of the Victorian wagon train, for example, is one of the most magnificently odd and brilliantly surreal things Iâ??ve ever seen; in other-words, itâ??s pure Keaton.
From this point on, the film is relentlessly funny, and its observations of human behaviour are at once accurate, and hilarious. Keatonâ??s best work often contains many elements of an action film, and this one is no exception; While being chased by three men Buster must survive the crashing rapids of a river, and ends up dangling from a waterfall trying to save the one he loves.
â??Our Hospitalityâ?? abounds with Keatonâ??s unique charm and wit, and is certainly one of his greatest cinematic achievements. The film surprisingly doesnâ??t seem to get as much attention as some of Busters other celluloid outings, but it deserves a watch by any fan of comedy.
