Review of Our Daily Bread (2006) by Ben V — 01 Mar 2009
Fascinating movie, with no dialogue (except a little overheard conversation here and there), no narration, no music--just artfully composed scenes and ambient sound. As such, it imposes very little judgment on what is documented.
I found that I was far less horrified than I expected to be. Some scenes are disturbing and some arejust gross, But it didn't seem horrible to me. There's lots of indelicate handling of animals (including cute, fuzzy chicks being sorted on conveyor belts and blown out of chutes into baskets), and some graphic killing of animals, but if you're a meat eater you shouldn't be startled by this. It's more the scale and the assembly-line production that makes your jaw drop.
Well worth watching. But not during dinner.
