Review of Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) by Nick C — 24 Oct 2016
Ouija: Origin of Evil was an unwanted horror prequel/sequel that ended up working out in a big way. This is a great looking movie really sucks you into the 1960's setting. If you can get past the few annoying jump scares, this film contains some pretty convincing horror at its core.
Not only is this film genuinely creepy, it also has great characters that I surprisingly cared about. That was what elevated this movie above the average horror film for me. It was first and foremost concerned with being a good film, not just a horror film.
Nothing scary happens in this movie until the main family has been fully developed. That is a big risk for a horror movie in this day and age to take, but I think in the end it really paid off. Ouija: Origin of Evil consistently gave me chills throughout, and creeped me out in a different way than most mainstream horror films.
4.1 / 5.
