Review of Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) by Daniel Y — 26 Oct 2016
2016 has been a disappointment for many things like highly anticipated sequels (Independence day resurgence, alice through the looking glass, x-men Apocalypse, jason bourne, and jack reacher never go back), highly anticipated blockbusters (Batman v.
Superman, Suicide Squad, Ghostbusters, x-men Apocalypse, and Independence day resurgence) and movies based on novels ( Inferno, The Lady on the Train, Jason Bourne, and The BFG). But if there's one thing it has been successful at is horror/thriller movies such as (Lights Out, The Conjuring 2, Don't Breathe and 10 Cloverfield Lane).
Now to add to that list of goodness is the unexpected success that is Ouija: Origin of Evil. This movie surprised the heck out of me, because it focuses more on setting up strong characters and actual tension then it does scares and clichés.
Also, it doesn't have any wooden acting in it like most horror films, especially sequels, do. Also it has a compelling story that you can get behind due to clever dialogue, good story telling and good acting that lead you to actually care and all of this feels very strange saying since this is a prequel to Ouija which is one of the worst horror films ever made.
Now, saying all that, there still are problems with it and that is expected, in my opinion, due to the fact that it is based on a board game that really has no story arch of anykind, but the problems are that the ending and some of the scares are clichéd and there's a CGI monster in there that destorys the feel of a film that's made in the 60's, which I did admire.
But yeah that's about all that's wrong with it. So I do recommend it and thankfully I don't have to see the other one to make this movie make sense, which I'm pretty sure was a move that the film makers purposely did due to the many negative reactions directed toward the 1st Ouija.
