Review of Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016) by Timothy A — 27 Nov 2016
It's rare that a sequel surpasses the original as much as this one does, although it's coming from an incredibly low bar. The first half is understated to the point where it occasionally flirts with classiness and more frequently, with sluggishness, but when the clichés arrive they come thick & fast.
There's one quite decent device where the obligatory horror-period-piece priest analyses what's going on, and to be fair the climax does go places you don't expect (assuming you forgot that the entire plot of this prequel was recounted in the original Ouija, which you probably did while you were watching it).
Still, at best it's still studio tripe whose high spots just mean it's uneven rather than an unmitigated disaster.
