Review of Ouija (2014) by Kate H — 13 Feb 2015
Okay. What's that joke again about the title being created before the film? That one for sure. This one is probably about as bad as you've heard. Really I think they decided that since table top games are a thing why not use the one creepy board game and fail badly at it.
If you've got a horror film that is riding on a gimmick then it behooves the filmmaker to give the horror fan what they want relatively quickly with little exposition (see Tusk, Human Centipede, Blair Witch, etc). This film has way too much exposition and it's added as the film goes along under the guise of clues or uncovering a mystery where there isn't much of one. We have two very brief Ouija sessions and that is it. The rest is mundane activities looking dramatic, more exposition, and some menacing shadows and writing.
Things perked up a bit when Insidious Lady showed up but things quickly got boring again. And typical.
I didn't expect anything from this film and still managed to be disappointed. There's one achievement Ouija definitely has.
