Review of Oslo, August 31st (2011) by Dickie L — 23 Aug 2012
A remake of Louis Malle's 1963 Le Feu Follet, this is a slight disappointment. Anders is a recovering drug addict (in the original he was an alcoholic). Both are complicated souls suffering from depression, yet somehow the new film seems less profound.
Its still a saddening experience, but lacks the depth and nuance I was expecting. Anders proves impenetrable to both the audience and his friends - which is the whole point, but it doesn't help us much.
On the other hand, I could watch Le Feu Follet over and over.
