Review of Oscar and Lucinda (1997) by Andrew C — 06 Oct 2009
I greatly enjoyed this film. I love most of the roles Ralph Fiennes tends to pick. They're each very different from one another. Here he plays an eccentric bright red-headed priest, Oscar, who adopts a gambling problem.
What starts out as a means to an end. Winning bets, keeping only the amount he needs and donating the rest to the poor; turns into an addiction. Despite Oscar's phobia for the ocean, he meets Lucinda (played by Cate Blanchett) on a ship; who is equally obsessed with gambling.
They become good friends and eventually a final wager is made as to whether or not Oscar would be able to transport and put together a glass church for one of Lucinda's friends, who is also a priest working in a location that doesn't have a proper church.
