Review of Osama (2004) by Leanne S — 11 Oct 2007
This movie certainly did not elevate my opinion of Islam, especially the Taliban version of it. The Taliban mullahs are very, very perverted. The last scene of the movie, which was extremely disturbing, was masterfully done.
The only problems I had with this film were: 1) The girls's mother seemed awfully cruel. Who risks her daughter's life by dressing her up as a boy and then upbraids her for not acting the part well enough when she's never been taught how to act it? And why on earth didn't she provide her daughter with feminine products??!! The incident where her period gives her away was completely predictable and sad.
2) Why was the girl so wimpy? She was afraid to climb a tree! Are Muslim girls simply not taught basic things like tree-climbing? Are they brought up to be wimpy?
I wish Stephen Harper would commit to helping women gain equality with men, rather than sending Canadian troops on suicide missions. I don't know what to do about the bizarrely sexist men -o I think they're all psychopaths who belong in jail, but don't ask me how to get them there. The Afghanistan problem is not going to be an easy one to solve.
