Review of Orpheus (2013) by Carl S — 13 Sep 2007
Seeing this theatrically after years of DVD viewing was revelatory. Although this is the most conventional of the trilogy, and maybe of all Cocteau films, there's a mysteriousness that no amount of viewings seems to remove.
Thank you for that! I used to spend most of my time focusing on the mirror tricks and the contrast between to two celebrity poets-- trying to draw connections with Cocteau himself and links to his other work, but this time around I was completely taken by Casares.
I overheard someone pondering why Marais would be willing to give everything up to follow her (Death). In the past I'd felt similarly, but this time I was ready to grab the rubber gloves and hop through the bathroom mirror to track her down.
